Biography

Xiping Hu is currently a tenured professor and doctoral supervisor at Beijing Institute of Technology, and the executive director of the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute of Shenzhen MSU-BIT Univesity. He is the head of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Joint Laboratory for Emotional Intelligence and Pervasive Computing, which is the first Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Joint Laboratory to be approved in the information science discipline in years.

Xiping Hu completed his PhD at The University of British Columbia. His research is in the broad areas of crowd computing, cyber-physical systems and emotional intelligence computing (ranked 1st, 2nd, and 51st globally in Google Scholar citations, respectively). He innovatively proposed a cyber-physical system theory for human-machine-object mobile interconnected perception, overcoming challenges in real-time, reliable, and seamless multi-objective information interaction and perception. This work enabled the establishment of a dynamic, adaptive collaboration system among multiple individuals, machines, and objects.

Based on these studies, Dr. Hu has published 102 papers as the first or corresponding author in JCR Q1 and CCF-A category journals, including IEEE TPAMI/TIP/TMC/TPDS/JSAC, ACM MobiCom/MM/SIGIR, AAAI/IJCAI/ACL, with a total impact factor of 835.82. Additionally, 13 national and PCT international invention patents have been granted. His research has been cited and positively reviewed by over 40 academicians and 100 IEEE/ACM Fellows and their teams worldwide, with 25 papers classified as highly cited by ESI. Since 2019, he has been repeatedly listed among Stanford University’s “Top 2% Scientists list”.

His research has received funding from major projects, with a total PI funding exceeding 100 million RMB. These projects have significantly contributed to industrial upgrades and enhanced international competitiveness. As the second contributor, he was part of a team awarded the Provincial Natural Science Grand Prize (the only award in information sciences history) for "Key Issues in Brain-Object Mobile Interconnection", and the National Natural Science Second Prize for "Key Issues in Ubiquitous Depression Perception." Additional honors include the Ministry of Education-Huawei "Intelligent Base" Pioneer Teacher Award and mentored students to win the only Best Paper Award at the 22nd IEEE HealthCom and third place (3rd/266 teams) in the 2020 IEEE International Affective Intelligence Challenge. He has been invited to deliver talks at leading institutions, including Cambridge University, IBM Watson, and the National University of Defense Technology.

Dr. Hu has also served as a reviewer for programs like the Chang Jiang Scholars Program and the 973 Program, Vice Chairman of the Intelligent Vehicle and Robotics Subcommittee of the China Instrument and Control Society, and held editorial positions for internationally renowned journals such as IEEE IoT Journal and IEEE TASE. He also served as General Co-Chair for international flagship conferences like the 8th IEEE SmartIoT, the 20th IEEE CloudCom, and the 35th IEEE/ACM IWQoS.

As co-founder and CTO of Bravolol Limited, Dr. Hu launched multiple mobile language education applications, gaining over 300 million users globally, including in developed countries such as those in Europe and North America. He led the development of a non-intrusive mental state assessment system based on intelligent behavior recognition, applied in renowned hospitals and institutions. Over 10,000 clinical experiments were conducted, achieving a depression diagnosis accuracy rate exceeding 80%. In recent years, he collaborated extensively with Digital Guangdong on emergency response systems, effectively constructing a real-time, reliable, seamless human-machine-object information interaction and adaptive collaboration system. This effort significantly improved the ability of emergency personnel to collaborate during disasters involving road blockages, network outages, and power failures, and supported 94,000 natural disaster defenses in Guangdong Province, saving an estimated 9 billion RMB in economic losses.
